Frequently Asked Questions

About Submissions

What genres do you accept?

We accept all genres! Pretty much the only requirements we have for submissions is that they are between 250 and 3500 words (for prose and narrative non-fiction) and no more than 50 lines for poetry.

Do you accept previously published works? What about simultaneous submissions?

Yes and yes. As long as you’ve got the right to re-publish your work, we’ll accept it for submission. And if your submission is accepted elsewhere, please let us know – drop us a message here.

How long will it take for me to hear back?

We aim to respond to all submissions within 4 weeks. However, this isn’t always possible; our team are all volunteers, after all. It’s rare that we go significantly past our 4 week target, but if you’ve not heard back from us within 6 weeks, please contact us here and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can with an update.

Do you pay for the stories and poems you publish?

We don’t. After extensive research and interaction with our audience, we decided that this wasn’t for the best. Instead, we publish stories for free, keep our overheads as low as possible, and what little excess money we have goes towards marketing the works we publish.

Do it cost to submit?

It does not. We aim to be as accessible as possible, and as such, there’s no fee associated with submitting to us. That’s partly made possible by our choice to not pay for the stories we publish, but also because of the dedication of our volunteers.

I’m struggling to submit using the Google Form. What should I do?

If you’re having serious problems submitting via the Google Form, then send us a message here and we’ll direct you how else you can submit. However, these unusual submissions can be difficult for us to track and so often experience delays, so we recommend only messaging us about this as a last resort.

About Feedback

How do I request feedback?

We offer free feedback for all submissions we choose not to publish. When you receive your email reply about your submission, you’ll be given all the information about how to request feedback.

How long does it take to receive feedback?

We aim to respond to all feedback requests within 8 weeks. This may not always be possible, so if you haven’t heard from us by then, feel free to send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

About Accepted Stories and Poems

What do you mean by ‘copy-editing’?

Copy-editing very much takes the form of us trying to make sure your work is the best it can possibly be. Usually this takes the form of checking for typos and punctuation mistakes, and a handful of recommendations or questions we may have. It’s rare for us to suggest any substantial changes; after all, we loved your original work enough to want to publish it!

How long does copy-editing take?

This can depend heavily on the availability of our volunteers, but usually we’re able to copy-edit works within 8 weeks. As with everything else, if you haven’t heard from us in this time, please feel free to get in touch.
